When and how much freelancers are charged

Beginning December 1, 2023, Solar Staff introduced a commission on freelancers' withdrawals and decreased the commission for clients.

For freelancers, the commission is calculated as a percentage of the withdrawal amount and charged when the funds are remitted to the withdrawal method.

Depending on the withdrawal method, the commission ranges from 2 to 4%.

For payouts to bank cards and accounts, the commission cannot be less than the following minimums:

  • ₽50, $2, or €2: For payouts to bank cards and accounts.

  • $25: For manual transfers to US bank accounts.

Important! If a payout involves currency conversion, the commission is applied not to the original amount in the balance currency, but to the final converted amount in the payout currency (see the example).

Sample payout with currency conversion

The balance currency is EUR, and the payout is made to a RUB-denominated Russian card:

  • Withdrawal amount: EUR 200

  • Conversion into RUB at the following rate: EUR 1 = RUB 95.187

  • Converted amount: 200 * 95,187 = RUB 19 037,4

  • 2.5% commission: 19 037,4 * 2.5% = RUB 475,94

  • Final payout amount: 19 037,4 -475,94 = RUB 18 561,46

CHANGES FOR OFFERS:

  • For clients, the Solar Staff commission has been halved to 3% of the offer amount. Freelancers will still be able to pay the commission instead of the client.

  • For freelancers, the commission on withdrawals will be the same as for those who were invited by the client (see above).

FAQ

Why have we implemented new commissions for freelancers?

The new commissions are going to accelerate the development of our service for the benefit of you, the customer. We have already launched a referral program, and are preparing to introduce automatic tax payments for individual entrepreneurs and the self-employed in Russia, as well as offer help with digital nomad visas and expand the list of countries we provide tax support for.

Does anything change in terms of accounting?

No, Solar Staff generates documents as before, with certificates indicating the amount of the task, and invoices – the full cost of the task (including the commission).

Can clients pay the commission instead of freelancers?

Yes, clients will have the option to cover the commission. The new tasks you receive will show if a client added the compensation to the task amount. The commission amount may not be covered fully, because the compensation is done at the commission rate for bank cards, which are the most popular withdrawal method.

The exact percentage depends on the country of the freelancer's account: 2.5% for Russia, and 2% for all other countries. The exception is individual entrepreneurs based in Russia: they get compensated fully at 3.5%, because their bank accounts are the only
means of withdrawal available to them.

The procedure of compensating the minimum commission

If the commission amount in monetary terms is less than its minimum threshold, the client is charged the minimum amount.

In other words, if the task amount is USD 50, the client that chooses to compensate the commission is charged not USD 1 (or 2%, which is the commission for withdrawals to bank cards), but USD 2, which is the minimum commission amount.
